FOOTHILLS DRY ROSÉ
Tasting Notes
A crisp, dry and quietly complex wine of a pale salmon colour. Layers of strawberry, melon and fynbos unfold with each sip of this Shiraz, Semillon and Viognier blend.
BLEND
83% Shiraz, Semillon, Viognier
VINEYARD
The vineyards rest in the foothills of the Stellenbosch mountains, five kilometres away from, and in sight of, the Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoons, a gentle breeze from False Bay rustles the vines, cooling the grapes. Our unique terroir is made up of a variety of soils, including the region’s native ‘koffie klip’ (literally, ‘coffee rock’) which produces wines with a fresh crispness and elegance.
HARVEST
We pick the grapes at 22.5°B in the coolness of the morning, placing them in small lug boxes to reduce compaction and damage to the fruit. We then hand sort the grapes.
Age of vines: planted in 2008 and 2009
Clone: Shiraz SH9; Viognier VR1A
Yield: 6 tonnes/ha
CELLAR
Bennie Booysen, our winemaker, has been part of the Klein Welmoed team since the beginning. He planted the first vines in 2008, tending to them as they developed. The farm is very close to his heart, and he is passionate about producing wines that truly express the unique terroir.
